Year Long Disaster
Black Magic; All Mysteries Revealed
Volcom Entertainment
It’s always a real pain in the ass when someone tries introducing me to a band by saying, “they’re the best band you’ve never heard of” and that’s mostly because I have heard of them, and merely suggesting I haven’t heard of them insinuates that I, unlike the much cooler, more maligned you, have my bearded head buried deep inside the business end of a pregnant alpaca.
That being said, Year Long Disaster is the best band you’ve never heard of.
I know. I’m such a dick. But forget about that right now and just pay attention.
YLD are a Californian trio with a world class pedigree and an outlaw swagger, which means if they roll on up to you and demand your money, guts, first born, or best pair of black boots, you don’t have a choice but to hand them over, Jack. Their ’07 self-titled debut was a fuzzy, monolithic, tail pipe-sucking, stoner rock motherfucker, perfect for those stuck-in-Altamont nights, but Black Magic is much, much sexier. Of course, I don’t need to tell you that all good parties involve fist fights and fucking, so the end result is the same bloody fun mess. I just mean that YLD have dipped their big, groovy balls in gold dust and champagne, baby, and Black Magic smells and sounds like goddamn success. They’ve conjured up a big load of awesome trouble here by fusing the feral stomp of Raging Slab, the sparkling sweat of Urge Overkill, the gnarly demeanor of Sonny Barger, and the witchy wonder of the supernatural. “Show Me Your Teeth,” “Love Like Blood,” and “Stranger in My Room” are the best boogie-fried bastards of the bunch, but dig the Zeppelin-flavoured “Seven of Swords” and the cosmic vibes of “Foggy Bottom” for some righteous variations on the dirty, desert rock theme.
Consider yourself in-the-know. Now go forth and educate the masses. Rock one million asses. Year Long Disaster will soon be the best band everyone’s heard of.
