Happy Volume-tine’s Day

When I moved out here into the dry air and my wife’s arms (sorry, but it is V-Day, so I gotta throw in a bit of mush), I left about eight boxes of my dearest possessions — mainly books and records, of course — in my mom’s basement. One by one I’m having them shipped out to me. One of them arrived the other day and amongst its contents were three 10″ splits from RocknRollRadio, an indie label/distribution company from Belgium. I completely forgot I had these wonderful slabs of wax. The three records are part of a series and were released in 2006 or 2007, I think. Anyway, I’ve got the turntable fired up so let’s see how loud we can make it in here!

Los Natas/Cabron

Side A – Los Natas (that’s Satan backwards for you mysterious types) are a trio of heavy dealers from Argentina and sound like a cavalcade of dump trucks carrying loads of cocaine over the Andes. They offer two tracks here, a cover of Kyuss’ “Allen’s Wrench” and a remix of “Highway Sun” from their Toba Trance album, and both of them are MASSIVE slabs of deafening stoner fuzz. What a way to start!

Side B – The three Cabron songs featured here — “Burden,” “Parascending,” and “Backlash” — first appeared on an earlier six-song demo, but have been reworked for this split, making this their first official release. I didn’t think this side of the album could possibly continue the sonic onslaught, but these Belgian bastards keep the boulder rolling right along, and even throw in some groovy melodies along the way that make Queens of the Stone Age sound like big pussies.
